Grierson DocLab

Grierson DocLab seeks young people aged 18-25 who are passionate about factual television, from nature documentaries to reality TV; short-form content to feature docs and everything in between. We are looking for applicants who have ideas about how they can contribute to the industry, and who can offer fresh perspectives that are not currently reflected on-screen or behind the scenes.

Successful applicants to Grierson DocLab will receive:

  • An intensive hybrid training programme (details of the areas covered can be found below), supported by industry professionals

  • A bursary-supported work placement at a production company, up to four weeks in length

  • Full registration for Sheffield DocFest, with all associated costs to attend covered

  • Mentoring from an industry professional

  • Matched with a Grierson DocLab Alumni buddy

  • Networking opportunities

  • Access to, and membership of the Grierson DocLab Alumni network

  • Bespoke, ongoing support to help career progression within the sector

Lab / Co-Production Forum Travel Grant

You can use their Travel Grants to support participation in

  • Labs – attendance at an eligible creative development lab for producers, writers, or directors working on feature projects and looking to develop skills and networks internationally, .

  • Co-Production (‘co-pro’) Forums – attendance at an eligible market/co-production forum for producers with feature projects.

International Collaboration Grant - BFI

  • This is a £1 million grants programme looking to support new cultural collaborations between UK artists, arts professionals and organisations and their peers in nearly 50 countries around the world. The grants range from £25,000 and £75,000.

ROYAL TELEVISION SOCIETY

The RTS have supported over 370 students from low income backgrounds, with 82% of graduates securing employment within TV and related industries.

TV Production and Journalism Bursary

Digital Innovation Bursary

They will provide participants with:

  • Funding from £1,500 per academic year

  • Free access to all RTS events, networking opportunities, screenings and lectures

  • A personal industry mentor

  • Free RTS Membership

PRINCE WILLIAM BAFTA BURSARY

This provides financial support to help assist junior creatives with the costs of progressing their career in film, games and television. Make a note in your diary to check their website, as they havent published when the 2025 applications open yet.

Examples of where the £2000 bursary is spent

  • a training course (including driving lessons)

  • the costs of equipment or software

  • relocation costs.

ARTSWORK - RISE

This programme offers £500 in funding to young creatives aged 13 – 30. The scheme supports young creatives in overcoming barriers to developing their creative practice and is available to those based in the south-east and parts of the south-west of England – view the map.

ScreenSkills bursaries

A ScreenSkills bursary is a cash grant to remove the obstacles to getting into the screen industries or progressing your career once you’re in. You can apply for money to pay for most things that relate to work and continuing professional development, such as training fees, accommodation, care, disability access costs, equipment, software and travel. (Age 18+). Applications open online.

Thrive programme - CREATIVE ACCESS

Thrive is a 12-month career development programme of training, networking and support especially designed for individuals that are under-represented in the creative industries as they progress in their career. Not a bursary as such, but equally valuable for those keen to have support early on in their career. Companies apply for their in house talent.
